When you become an approved foster parent, you’ll probably want to start straight away. Sometimes this happens quickly, at other times it might take a little while. But with strong connections with many local authorities, it won’t be long before you’re getting your home ready to welcome your first child.

Preparing your own children
We must not forget that for foster parents with children of their own, fostering will affect them too. It’s something we’ll talk about a lot during the assessment and it’s a big consideration. We asked some of our foster parents to share their advice on supporting your own children.

Welcoming a child
Throughout the process, our referrals team will work with the local authority to make arrangements for the arrival of a child. We'll keep you updated throughout, assist with any additional information you'd like to know about the child and support you in welcoming a child into your home.

We encourage all foster parents to create a family book with photographs and other information about their homes. We give this to the child you'll be caring for so they can start getting to know you before they arrive on your doorstep.
And wherever possible, we’ll set up an introductory meeting. Getting to know each other in advance takes a little bit of pressure and stress out of the situation for everyone.
