Stavrina's journey through the assessment process and single parent fostering
Stavrina thought about fostering for several years before making the leap. She shares her journey through the assessment process and fostering as a single carer.

Starting the journey
Stavrina thought about fostering for several years before deciding to take that first step and apply. Having always been very maternal and, with her whole working life dedicated to making a difference for children, through roles in childcare, education, and the early years sector, Stavrina knew she wanted to become a foster parent.
“I'd been wanting to foster for a while, purely because of my background, where I've seen lots of different safeguarding cases, and I just wanted to offer the help and to make a child feel safe. I thought, I've got a spare room - I want to give someone a safe home.”
Since being approved in 2023, Stavrina has cared for two children: First, a young girl aged 13 on a short term basis, and now currently caring for a 2 year old girl who is completely thriving in her care.
Single but not alone
As a single foster carer, Stavrina was a little nervous at first, but was soon reassured when she realised how much support she would have around her.
“Initially it was more daunting being on my own but I had a lot of support from the agency and also from the out-of-hours service. And, when fostering, you find that your family will also support you so there's no reason for you to not be able to do it on your own. With my current foster child, she's just adored by everybody and everyone - so you don't feel like you're on your own.”
The thorough assessment
Stavrina shared her experience of the fostering assessment process.
“The assessment process I found I was dreading because I always imagined it would be very daunting, long winded, very invasive and intrusive. But it was completely the opposite. I actually enjoyed the process and it made it feel quite real and how important it was – the steps that needed to be put in place, to become a foster carer. It was a bit of a whirlwind, but it was a nice process.”
The assessment process in fostering usually takes between 4-6 months, and can sometimes be seen as a difficult and lengthy process – but that is really not the case, as once you start finding out more about fostering and begin meeting regularly with your assessing social worker, many find the process becomes enjoyable and that time really does fly! Of course, it is also important to remember the importance of having a thorough assessment in order to make sure each family is suitable to foster, and that fostering is also right for them. Stavrina added:
"It was reassuring to see just how intense the process was. Making sure the property was safe, the room was the right environment for a child, thinking about all the different age groups… It was reassuring, and comforting.”
Another part of the fostering assessment that applicants can feel nervous about is the panel meeting, and Stavrina shared her apprehension around this part of the process:
“When I was attending panel I was thinking ‘oh my goodness, what's it going to be like?’ But it was just like having a normal conversation. They were just making sure I was right for what I was applying for, and that I had all the checks in place and I was doing it for the right reasons.”
"Go for it"
Becoming a foster mum has been life-changing for Stavrina, and she spoke of how seeing her foster daughter blossom – going from an introverted child to a bubbly and extroverted little girl – has been one of her proudest moments.
Sharing advice for anyone who is thinking of fostering, Stavrina said:
“Do the research, but think about it on your own, in your own mind, about why you're doing it. Is it for you? Am I doing it because I want to help a child? And if it's something you really want to do and you're doing it for all the right reasons - Go for it.”
